Though I Am an Inept Villainess

The Kingdom of Ei maintains a Maiden Court where candidates from five leading clans are raised as potential future consorts. Kou Reirin, the Kou clan’s representative, appears to embody the court’s ideal — capable, refined and deeply loved. The cost is less visible: Reirin has lived with a body so fragile that everyday exertion can be dangerous.

Shu Keigetsu holds the opposite social position. Distrusted and resented, she sees Reirin as the person who received everything she lacks. During the Qixi festival, Keigetsu uses a forbidden art to exchange their bodies.

The exchange does not produce the simple victory Keigetsu expected. Reirin wakes in the body of the accused outcast and immediately faces the consequences of Keigetsu’s reputation and actions — yet she is astonished by how strong and healthy the body feels. Keigetsu, meanwhile, inherits Reirin’s admired identity and discovers how punishing Reirin’s physical weakness really is.

The anime builds its court drama from that reversal: each woman is forced to live inside the other’s limitations, relationships and public image while wider palace tensions begin to surface.
